Virginia Ann (Dowe) Cherry, 89, of Uniontown, PA quietly passed away with her family by her side on Monday, October 21, 2019 at the Meadow Heights Senior Apartments where she resided.
She was born August 2, 1930 in Greensburg, PA to James Howard Dowe and Anna Margaret Dowe.
She resided in Monarch, PA and graduated from Dunbar Township High School in 1948. After graduation, she worked in Uniontown Hospital as a Nurse’s Aide for several years providing compassionate care to patients.
She met and married Walter Cherry in 1949 and resided in Cumberland, Maryland for a short period.
In 1952, they moved back to Uniontown, PA where they joined the Church of God. There, Virginia served as a Sunday School Teacher and secretary during this time.
Virginia and Walter had 6 children, baby Debra Jean (deceased), Reverend Walter Stephen Cherry, Timothy Cherry, Kimberly Cherry (deceased), Kelvin Cherry, and Paula (Cherry) Alston.
When her husband, Reverend Walter Cherry was called to the ministry, he became Pastor of the First Church of God in Houston, PA. Walter, Virginia and the family travelled many miles, every Sunday to Houston, PA.
Virginia was a beautiful, devout Christian who faithfully served the Lord and church as First Lady beside her husband for 32 years until they retired.
Later in life, Virginia enjoyed going to the Uniontown Senior Center with great pleasure where she sang hymns and participated in activities with a host of friends. She also attended the Solid Rock Church, Uniontown, PAwhere she was Mother of the Church.
Virginia truly was a loving, caring mother, grandmother and great grandmother. A very sweet person indeed. A good friend to all who needed her and loved by so many in the church community and the local community.
