William Washington Obituary

William J. “Jerry” Washington, Jr.

William Jerome Washington, Jr. was born April 12, 1938, to the late William J. Washington, Sr. and Sarah Chapple Washington of Brownsville, PA. He transitioned peacefully at Westmoreland Hospital at the age of 85, surrounded by family.

Jerry was the oldest of four, which included sisters, Marilyn Cook, Vonnie, and Carolyn Washington. At an early age, he experienced the devastating loss of his mother due to an illness. His mother was the nucleus of the family. This led to him and his siblings coming under the loving care of his maternal grandparents John and Bessie Chapple conveying the message,“It takes a Village to Raise a Child.”

Jerry was baptized at Mt. Lebanon Baptist Church of Brownsville, PA and attended Redstone Middle School before enlisting in the U.S Air Force. Jerry was a proud veteran who believed that his military service was an important factor in his life fostering valuable life skills such as self-discipline, respect, hard work, and devotion to family.

Following the completion of service, Jerry worked as a skilled welder before becoming employed by U.S. Steel Corporation located in Homestead, PA.  There he enjoyed a 25-year career before retiring in 1988. He then seized the opportunity to step into a new career as a chauffeur which he relished. He was employed by Francis and Chip Palumbo, Chris Cluss, Victor and Mylan Pharmaceutical Company of Morgantown, WV.

November 29, 1969, Jerry married the love of his life Diane “Dee.” They spent 54 years together; and he became the father of three daughters, Mona (Clyde) of Upper Chichester, PA; Myra (Mike) of Uniontown, PA; and Mia (Tarrell) of Uniontown. He was blessed with grandchildren Avery, Christian, Ariene, Aubrey and Ziane and great grandchildren he adored, Blake and Adalyn. He also shared a special relationship with his brothers-in-law Gay Gay, Buzzy and Tiny, to them he was known as “Wash.”

Jerry was a member of the I.B.P.O.E of W. (Improved Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks of the World); and he was a member of Council. He enjoyed traveling, reading novels and autobiographies, fishing, and crossword puzzles. He was a diehard Pittsburgh Steeler and Pirates fan, and he liked to dance (if that’s what you would call it).

To the end, Charles “Applejack” Mickens, his best-man; Robert “Bo” Spencer and Winfield Thomas were his guys, and he was grateful for the friendship he had with them that lasted his lifetime.

He is preceded in death by his parents William Sr. and Sarah Chapple Washington; grandparents John and Bessie Chapple; aunt Reva, Vivian, and Marion; and sister Marilyn (Jack) Cook.

Along with his wife Diane and their children, grandchildren and great-great grandchildren, Jerry leaves to cherish his memory his sisters Vonnie Washington (Columbus, Ohio); Carolyn Washington (Pittsburgh, PA); brother-in-law, Gary (Carol) (Uniontown, PA); great aunt Catherine Finney (Pittsburgh, PA) and aunt Dr. Selma Harrison (Columbus, Ohio); and a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and nephews, cousins, and many friends.
