Mr. Murphy Mitchell, Jr. was born February 12, 1938 in Grindstone, Pa. He transitioned from this life on April 18, 2026 in Newboro, Pa.

Mr. Mitchell was the fifth of eleven children, born to the late Mr. Murphy Mitchell, Sr. and Addie Lee (Edwards) Mitchell.

Affectionally known as Fat Sam, Mr. Mitchell attended Madison Elementary School in Grindstone, Pa. and completed his primary education at Orient Elementary School in Orient, Pa. He graduated from Redstone High School in 1956. After completing high school, Mr. Mitchell briefly relocated to Detroit, Mich., where his parents and many siblings had relocated to from Pennsylvania. While there, he was employed at B. Siegel Department Store.

In October 1958, Mr. Mitchell enlisted in the U.S. Army and was stationed at Fort. Jackson in Columbia, S.C. and Fort Leonard Wood in Missouri Ozarks, Mo. In May 1959, he was assigned to Fort Bragg in Fayetteville, N.C., where he became a paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne Division. In September 1960, he was deployed to Mainz, Germany. Mr. Mitchell was honorably discharged in 1962. After his career in the military, he returned to Orient, Pa. gaining employment with Pittsburgh Foundry, and later, as a construction worker with local 1958 Pittsburgh. Mr. Mitchell retired in 2000.

Mr. Mitchell enjoyed playing and watching baseball. While he played on the basketball team in high school, baseball was his first sports love. During his time between high school and his military service, Mr. Mitchell wowed sports fans with his sharp sports skills on the diamond as an outfielder with a high-level league baseball team. He was also a huge Pittsburgh Pirates fan.

Mr. Mitchell was preceded in death by his parents: Mr. and Mrs. Murphy, Sr.; four brothers: Julius, Elmer, Marvin, and Lloyd; and five sisters: Betty Robinson, Mamie Patterson, Mary Ridley, Cynthia Mitchell-Lee, and Janice Giles.

He leaves to cherish his memory one brother: Melvin Mitchell of Lake Forest, Calif.; a host of nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews; cousins and friends.
