Jacob Settles Obituary

Jacob Frederick Settles affectionately known as “Freddie”, born April 20, 1930, passed away suddenly on
January 11, 2024, at the age of 93. He was preceded in death by his parents, Jacob, and Evelyn (Frye)
Settles, and 8 siblings. The deceased are Evelyn, Belinda, Nelson, Robert, Jack, Richard, Nina and
Charlotte. Surviving siblings are Goldie “Dollie” (Roy) Jones and Lawrence Settles (Sonya) of Pittsburgh,
Darlene (Richard) Curry and Donna Settles Johnson of Uniontown.
He served in the United States Army and Reserves, then retired from Duquesne Steel Mill, after 36
years. But the true meaning and passion of his life started when he met Katherine (Wardlaw) of
Columbus, GA, and then married her on November 4, 1949. Their marriage of love lasted 55 years
before her passing on March 6, 2005.
He would have been 94 on April 20, 2024. He lived a good long life doing things he loved and caring for
his loved ones. The spirit and love of Jacob and Katherine will carry on through time as they leave a
strong legacy of 129 offspring, 12 children, 36 grandchildren 59 great grandchildren and 22 great great
grandchildren. Surviving children are Marlene Roberts and Desi Settles (Rochelle) of Warren, OH, Regina
“TT” Settles (Marlin), Frederick ” Pip” Settles, Marvin “Bubby” Settles (Sheila), Glenn Settles, Mona
“Lisa” Settles and Evelyn “Punkin” Settles, all living locally and Julia ”Judy” Mackey of Washington, DC.
The previously deceased were Jake Settles and Cathryn ”Cacky” Garret.
Our Father was a determined, compassionate, funny person. The impact of the pain of our loss is at a
level that is hard to comprehend. We thank everyone for the friendship and companionship that was
shared with him.
We thank our dad’s very dear friend Doug Smith and our cousins Bruce Settles and Roger Frye. A special
thanks to his companion of more than 12 years, Tracy Thompson. A very special thanks to Maurice
Jackson for his companionship and continued caring and support and for being Freddie’s everyday guy.
A special thanks to the Bishop Leonard Tucker, Reverand Louis Ridgely and Dr. Reverend Gary Yarbrough
for providing spiritual guidance during our fathers’ homegoing celebration. A big thank you to Cousin
Tony Jackson, Glenda Isaac and her crew, Mrs. Gwendolyn Ridgely, Lucretia “Twinkle” Wallace, Glen
Wallace and everyone for their support with our father’s services.
