Helen (Betts) Shaw, age 101, of Hiller, PA, passed away peacefully at the WVU Uniontown Hospital.
She was born on June 15, 1922 in Beckley W. VA. She then moved to Hiller, PA where she married the late Rev. William Shaw and they raised their family. Helen worked as a cook and a nanny. She also volunteered time as a missionary at the Mt. Lebanon Baptist Church in Brownsville, PA where she was an active member in the past.
Helen was a strong, bold, and resilient woman of God. She enjoyed sewing and cooking – in years past when all her children were yet with us, she could be found making a big, delicious Sunday dinner for her family after attending church. She loved to clean and decorate and was known for keeping an immaculately clean house; it truly was her sanctuary on earth. Her favorite holiday was Christmas – she played Silent Night by the Temptations year-round no matter what the season. Helen was also an avid sports fan; she enjoyed watching the Pittsburgh Steelers and even NASCAR – she could be found rooting for Jimmie Johnson to win the race. She loved listening to all music - the Temptations, Chubby Checker, Elvis, and Gospel. She could always be found putting on the AM radio to listen to a Gospel program on the weekends. Helen enjoyed being in the presence of family and friends – often you could find her quietly sitting in her chair just smiling and laughing taking everything in. Her smile and laughter brought joy to all that met her – and she will be immensely missed.
She is sadly predeceased by her children: Evon Johnson, Brenda Lowe, Curtis Shaw, Vivian Washington, Millicent Francis, and William Shaw.
Helen is survived by her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and a host of family, and friends who will miss her dearly.
Helen spent the last of her twilight years as a resident at Mt. Marcina Manor, and the family would like to thank the staff for the care they provided for her. The family would like loved ones to consider donating in memory of Helen to Mt. Macrina Manor to continue to fund activities for the residents, which Helen enjoyed attending during her time there.
