Eugene Stanley Edwards, affectionately known as “Chuckie” and “Gene”, was born on February 4, 1949 in Palmer, PA and passed away peacefully after a long illness in Uniontown Hospital, Uniontown, PA on Friday, January 22, 2021. He is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Violet Louise Pace Edwards; his parents Eugene Hugh Edwards and Josephine Edwards, and his brother Willie Joseph Edwards.
Eugene graduated from German Township High School in McClellandtown, PA in May 1969. He was a terrific football player and played on the Varsity Team. He enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps in June 1969 and was honorably discharged in June 1971. He later re-enlisted on September 24, 1973 and was honorably discharged in June 1975. While serving in the Marine Corps, he attained the rank of Corporal (E-4), was a Machine Gunner, and awarded the National Defense Service Medal and Rifle Sharpshooter Badge.
He worked at various jobs after his service in the military, including the now-closed Hatfield Power Plant in Carmichaels, PA. He worked for the B&O Railroad, and the Susquehanna Railroad for 10 years. He was a State Correctional Officer at the State Correctional Facility in Greensburg, PA, and retired after 20 years of service.
Growing up, Eugene was a member of the former Rising Star Baptist Church of Palmer, PA. He later became a member of St. Paul’s A.M.E. Church, Uniontown, PA, Rev. Alfred L. Thompson, Pastor. He also was a proud member at the Curry Dyson VFW Post 3514 in Uniontown, PA.
He is survived by his stepsons: Ronald Kinney and Christopher M. Pace, three grandchildren and one great-granddaughter; siblings: Shirley Burden of Norristown, PA; Retha J. Edwards of Charlotte, NC; Sandra Edwards of Bronx, NY; Lottie M. Edwards of Pittsburgh, PA; Edith G. Skaggs (Richard) of Grimesland, NC; Jerome Edwards of Palmer, PA; Carl Edwards (Paulette) of Masontown, PA; Vivian Mosley of Pittsburgh, PA; and Suzette Edwards of Philadelphia, PA; and a host of nephews, nieces, cousins, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, and other relatives and friends.
