Charles C. Davis departed peacefully from this life on the evening of Thursday, June 26, 2014, at Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn, New York. Charles (Chuck as he was famously called) was born on July 10, 1938 to Willie Davis and Elizabeth Crawley Davis of Petersburg, Virginia. He was one of fourteen children born out of this blessed union.
Chuck attended Westminster College where he earned his Bachelor’s Degree, while at Westminster, Chuck played basketball from 1956-1960. He was an American NAIA All American in 1960. He tallied 1,408 career points, which was the third most in school history when he graduated and was ranked eighth.
He is a member of the Titan Sports Hall of fame. He led the Titans to two NAIA National Tournaments in 1959.
On graduating from Westminster he continued to play basketball, he had a short stint with the Harlem Globetrotters. While playing with the Globetrotters in Brazil, he hurt his knee and returned to New York. His love for athletics continued after leaving the Globetrotters, he became a referee for intercity basketball teams. And he also developed a love for tennis and golf.
After Basketball, Chuck was drawn to Public Service; He worked as a Caseworker for New York City Human Resources Administration. He was later promoted to the Deputy Commissioner’s liaison for Direct Child Care Services for more than 20 Years. He retired from his position in 1995.
He leaves to cherish his memory two sons; Marcus and Dai’Mion and one daughter, Kimberly; five grandchildren Maurice, Jarod, Jordan, Tyler and Ethan Fontanea. Along with three sisters, Angeline Mclee, Marion Summers and Elaine Davis; one Brother Alfred Davis and a host of nieces and nephews
He is preceded in death by three brothers; Walter, James and Willie and six sisters Shirley, Margie, Helen Dorothy, Mary and Marie
We will miss his wonderful sense of humor and his infectious laugh.
