Ms. Carol Yvette Husbands, affectionately known as Ms. Carol was a loving daughter, sister, mother, grandmother, aunt and friend to many. She passed away on February 25, 2019 after a bout of illness at Uniontown HealthCare & Rehabilitation.
Born in Barbados on February 28, 1951 the youngest daughter of the late Clarence Bedford Husbands, a tailor and the late Ina Muriel Thomas Husbands, a seamstress. She grew up with her elder siblings Shirley and Hallam Husbands at the family home across the street from Miramar Hotel. She attended Sunday school and services at St. James Anglican church, St James, Barbados. She attended elementary school at St. James Mixed and advanced to The Modern High School where she had lots of friends and was fond of playing games including netball, swimming, and field hockey. Carol enjoyed roaming the neighborhood from Holetown to Lower Carlton playing with the multitude of friends and cousins along the way.
Upon graduation from high school, she worked for a short time at the The Barbados Civil Service Commission before moving on to a job at Seawell International airport. After her father's death in 1970, she followed her big brother and emigrated to New York City where she settled for the next 30 years in Harlem.
On April 5, 1972 she welcomed the birth of her only daughter Ramona Reeves. This single mom struggled with the help of new friends in her community, especially Ms. Mattie and Ms. May Berry to raise her daughter away from her own mother whom she left in Barbados. She was a favorite and well known “fixture” on 138th Street and 6th Ave and 140th Street. Ms Carol was loved by all young and old. She rarely missed a jazz festival, play, street fair, or block party in the summertime; and was often found hanging with the neighbors and sitting on the steps of the building; playing with the kids in the street and the local park.
She worked for the Dennelisse Corporation in New York as a Home Health Aide for over 20 years and her love for people, especially children, was a valued asset. She went above and beyond the call to keep her charges safe and provided happiness in her charges troubled lives.
In 2006, she joined her daughter when she moved to Uniontown, PA. There she made friends quickly and settled into her new community, bonding with her young grandson.
Upon moving to Uniontown, she found employment with the Women's Shelter in Uniontown for 3 years and sat on the Healthy Start, Inc. Fayette county branch Task Force committee for 5 years. She also volunteered for the Main Street Classic 5K Race for the homeless.
Carol is predeceased by her parents, and her sole grandson, Semori Kimani Wilson; and cousins: Walter and Wycliff husbands.
She leaves behind her daughter, Ramona Reeves; sister, Shirley D. Husbands of New Jersey; brother, Hallam R. Husbands of New York; and 3 granddaughters. She will also be fondly missed by her 3 nieces, 2 nephews, 9 great-nephews, 2 great-nieces; and a vast host of relatives from the Thomas and Husbands’ families; and various other branches of family and friends from Barbados, USA, Canada, U.K., the Caribbean islands of St. Lucia, Trinidad and Tobago, Jamaica, Ghana and Panama.
