Betty Mays Obituary

Betty J. Mays, age 95, of Uniontown, PA, went home to be with the Lord on July 6, 2025, at her home with family by her side. She was born on February 20, 1930, in Uniontown, the daughter of the late Robert A. and Gertrude (Thomas) Tarpley.

Betty was a graduate of Georges Township High School, class of 1948. She met her husband, Leo Sr., and they wed in 1952. They had two wonderful sons, Leo Jr. and Vincent.

Betty spent her life serving the Lord. She was a faithful member of King David Missionary Baptist Church in Detroit, MI for over 40 years. She later moved back to PA in 1995 and attended her original home church, Mt. Calvary Baptist Church, where she served on the Usher Board (30 years) and as a deaconess, and she became the Mother of the Church. Throughout her life, Betty served as the President of the Congress of Christian Education, as an Usher and the Financial Secretary for the Youghiogheny Western Baptist Assoc., and as Chairperson for the Widows Circle chair. She often volunteered at the food bank with her husband and worked with the Women's Home and Foreign Mission. She became a member of the Eastern Star in 1978; and as a lifetime member, she served as Worthy Matron.

In addition to her parents, Betty is preceded in death by her husband, Leo Mays, Sr.; son, Leo Mays, Jr.; siblings: Edith Scott, Anna M. Abbott, Robert A. Tarpley, Sr., Theodore Tarpley, Simmie Tarpley, and Donald Tarpley.

Betty is survived by her son: Vincent Mays of Uniontown; siblings: Emma Darby of Cleveland, OH, Arnold Tarpley, Sr., of Pittsburgh, PA, Raymond Tarpley, Sr., of Uniontown, Kenneth (June) Tarpley of Uniontown, Patty (Jerome) Blannon of Jeannette, PA, sister-in-law, Sylvia Tarpley of Uniontown; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Friends will be received at the Youghiogheny Western Baptist Association (YWBA), 624 Duck Hollow Rd-Rte 21, Uniontown, PA on Saturday, July 26th from 10 AM – 12 PM; the funeral will begin at 12 PM . Interment will immediately follow at the LaFayette Cemetery, Briar Hill, PA.

In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made in memory of Betty Mays to Mt. Calvary Baptist Church, 135 N. Morgantown St., Fairchance, PA 15436.
