Sergeant Mills retired from the Metropolitan Police Department in 1980.  Author of "Exploring Nature Through Poetry", Percy is noted for delivering each poem from memory.  His interest in Radio Control Airplanes and other toys led Percy to develop the Steam Locomotive Model and Toy for which he secured a patent.  As a competitor at the 18th Senior Games, Percy was awarded a gold medal for the 1 mile walk at a time of 9 minutes and 11 seconds at the age of 67. God blessed Percy with great balance which he used on skateboards, skis, and snowboards. He also cut hedges and did lawn care until recently. To the Family of Percy E. Mills;

There isn’t any way to prepare for the loss of a family member. Suddenly, the loved one you had always turned to is gone. In the quiet moments when the hurt is hard to bear, may love become your shelter and may the beauty of memories become your comfort.

You have the condolences of the members of St. Paul’s A.M.E. Church as you make your way through this passage. It won’t be easy, but you can rely on the support of all your friends and church family. May you be filled with faith and hope even in the midst of inescapable grief, and find comfort in and with each other. Percy will be missed by everyone.

Words cannot adequately express our sympathy, but know that you are in our thoughts and prayers. Percy must have been a remarkable person. Just look around at his family and friends that are here to celebrate his life and his Home Going Service.

“Don't weep at my grave, for I am not there,
I've a date with a butterfly to dance in the air.
I'll be singing in the sunshine, wild and free,
Playing tag with the wind, while I'm waiting for thee.”

In His Service Always,
Rev. Alfred L. Thompson
And The Members of St. Paul’s A.M.E. Church

My sincerest condolences to the family and the many friends of Percy Mills. He was my section sergeant from 1970 to 1980 at the Third District of the Metropolitan Police Department in Washington, D.C. I have not yet met a man that I have admired more than Percy Mills. He was truly a cops' cop and was always there for us if we needed any guidance or advice. I have thought of him often over the years and am saddened that he is no longer with us. He will be missed be all whose hearts he touched.
