Doris Washington Obituary

God gave us Doris Mae Edwards, 98 years ago, and today He asked for her to come home. She was born on September 25, 1925, in Connellsville, PA to Mabel Alice Strader and Clyde William Edwards. Her journey to heaven began on Friday, March 8, 2024, at the Westmoreland Excela Hospital. She was comforted by her children at the end.

Mom spent her early life in Trotter, PA. She attended school in the Dunbar School District but married at the age of 16 and did not complete that education. However, Mom learned the greatest love lesson of all. See Matthew 22:37-39. “Love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, and mind.” “Thou shall love they neighbor as thyself.”

Doris was predeceased by her husband of 53 years, Arthur Vernon Washington; her parents; her mother-in-law, Emma Reynolds; and her son, Ron Washington. She was a faithful member of the St. Paul  Baptist Church in Vanderbilt until its closure. Later she joined the United Baptist Church in Connellsville and attended there faithfully as well. At United, she was president of the missionary society. Doris was also a member of the women’s auxiliary of the American Legion Unit 762, and the Fayette County Senior Action Counsil (SAC).

Doris had dreams of becoming an artist, but her real talent was becoming a mother. She is survived by her sister, Betty Hardy of Murraysville; her sons: Kenneth (Beatrice) of Connellsville, and Dennis (Karen) of Pittsburgh; her daughters: Verona (David) Griffin of Monroeville; Patricia (Walter) Cherry of Washington, PA, and Pamela Washington of Frisco, TX. Together they made Doris a grandmother 15 times and a great-grandmother 20 times.

Family and friends will be received at the LANTZ Funeral Home, Inc., 297 E. Main St., Uniontown, PA on Sunday, March 17th from 4-7 PM. A second viewing will be held at the Rodman Street Baptist Church, 6111 Rodman St, East Liberty Pittsburgh, PA 15206 on Monday, March 18th from 10-11 AM. The funeral service will begin at 11 AM with the Rev. Dr. Darryl Canady, Sr. Pastor officiating. Interment will be held at a later date at the Green Ridge Cemetery in Connellsville, PA.
